Introduction Of Societies and Application of Funds in a Government Parastatal

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Organization both profit and non- profit oriented need fundsย ย ย ย ย ย ย (financial assets) for their numerous operations. That is why allย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย organizations irrespective of their legal forms, device a means theirย ย ย ย ย ย ย day- to โ€“day operations. The funds sourced are not normally kept idle by the organization rather they are either being re invested toย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย generate future profit or consumed immediately to achieve theย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย origination day to day goals hence the word โ€œ source and applicationย ย ย of fundsโ€ in accounting profession

Source and application of funds simply means the various avenuesย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย available to an organization thought which it source itโ€™s financialย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย assets and allย ย the outlet through which the sourced financial assetsย ย ย ย ย leaves the coffers of the organization

In recent past, government pareastalal which institute ofย ย ย ย ย ย ย management and technology is one, depended revenue grants inย ย ย ย forms of subvention for few existence and growth, in this era ofย ย ย ย ย privatization, the government has decided to shade off itโ€™s financialย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย responsibilities in almost government paratatal so as to concentrateย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย in itโ€™s constitutional role of providing enabling environment forย ย ย ย ย ย economic activities to thrive. This scenario has left manyย ย ย government paratatal in total financial drought

For instance, the immediate lost years in the which institute ofย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย management and technology has been a hectic one as financialย ย ย ย ย ย ย starvation meted to it by the government has left the whichย ย institute with the following identifiably problems;-

1)ย ย ย ย ย ย Constant face off between management and trade union in respect regular payment of salaries

11)ย ย ย ย Lack of promotion to staff that are due to be promoted

111)ย ย inability to maintain their fixed assets such as

a)ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Building

b)ย ย ย ย ย ย Motor vehicle

c)ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Furniture and fittings

1V)ย ย ย ย inability to settle their other numerous over heard costs

V)ย ย ย ย ย ย Absence of non structures to replace the dilapidated once etc

The colossal nature of these problems enumerated above made theย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย institute of management and technology IMT various avenue ofย ย ย ย ย source for the following

I)ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Creation of nonโ€“existing charges such as accreditation fees, development fees and upward review of other existing charges;

ii)ย ย ย ย ย ย Carrying out aggressive campaign to increase the number of studentsย ย ย ย ย ย ย intake by reaching out to all seventeen local government in the stateย ย ย ย ย and beyond

iii)ย ย ย ย ย Scaling down the work force

iv)ย ย ย ย ย Denial of promotion to staff those are due to be promoted

those member yielded aย ย positive result as a report is issued byย ย ย ย ย ย ย admission department shows that nearlyย ย over 20,000 student wereย ย ย ย ย ย ย admitted in this academic year and the management can now payย ย ย ย their monthly salary bills of over 39 million naira and other overheadย ย ย ย ย cost. But the sustainability of the current trend is fillgloomy as theย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย funds sourced from these measures would be applied in solving shortย ย ย ย ย ย term problem which is mainly revenue in nature. While capitalย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย projects would be unattended to based on this it has become ofย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย paramount importance that a re appraised of all sourced of fundย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย available to IMT and how the fund sourced would be applied beย ย ย ย made to funds for itโ€™s capital and revenue expenditure.

Hence my choice of this topic source and application of funds I aย ย ย government parastatalโ€ A case study of institute of management andย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย technology IMT Enugu. Those research is concern with exposing theย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย source and application of funds.
