Environmental sustainability is theย maintenanceย of the factors and practices thatย contributeย to theย qualityย ofย environmentย on a long-term basis (Costanza, Robert, and Bernard C. Patten, 1995).ย Broadly speaking, environmental sustainabilityโ might be seen as โmeeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs,โ by taking on the general definition โmeeting the resource and services needs of current and future generations without compromising the health of the ecosystems that provide them,โ (โOur Common Futureโ). More specifically, environmental sustainability could be defined as a condition of balance, resilience, and interconnectedness that allows human society to satisfy its needs while neither exceeding the capacity of its supporting ecosystems to continue to regenerate the services necessary to meet those needs nor by our actions diminishing biological diversity.
Developed nations embarked on massive industrialization through manufacturing in order to reap the benefits that accompany this developmental strategy. Nations of the developing world are also adopting similar strategies to make the most of their natural resources. Realizing the negative effects of manufacturing on the environment and human lives, nations have began upgrading their manufacturing methods through the adoption of eco-friendly processes. Manufacturing companies across the globe have resorted to more environmentally safe enterprise and marketing activities due to the upsurge in the environmental difficulties and increasing public demand to reflect on the effects of their activities in the environment (Kotler, 2011). Strategic approaches have been adopted by several firms to meet the concerns of stakeholders in the manufacturing industry, while producing goods that meet customer expectation regarding environmental safety concerns (Hult, 2011). Among the responses to this change in customer expectations is the alteration in current products while bringing on board new products and processes aimed at minimizing environmental effect, but instead improve the environmental protection by firms (Cronin et al, 2011). The study seeks to appraise the environmental sustainability practices adopted by beverage manufacturing industries in Nigeria. A case study of Nigeria breweries Onitsha.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Manufacturing companies play significant roles in the economy of the nation in providing the needed goods and services. They also provide employment opportunities, generate income for the government and contribute to the living standard of the people. However, the manufacturing process releases toxic substances and waste into water bodies, and also releases toxic gasses into the air, thus affecting the clean air. The increasing activities of these manufacturing companies consistently leads to environmental degradation and exact negative environmental impact. Consequently, this situation poses a great challenge to the nation on the need to mitigate environmental degradation. Therefore, the problem confronting the study is to appraise the environmental sustainability practices adopted by beverage manufacturing industries in Nigeria. A case study of Nigeria breweries Onitsha.
