Chapter One of Effect of Computerization of Library on Students Academy Performance
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A library consists of a large collection of books, periodicals, films or other information sources including digital. The collections can be of print, audio, and visual materials in numerous formats, including maps, prints, and documents (Banerjee et al, 1999). However, Information and Communication Technology has reformed the concept of libraries. Each and every library is slowly getting computerised, Nigerian libraries inclusive. The Computerization of library services is aimed at modernizing the library system in Nigeria as what is obtained in the industrialized countries so as to ensure efficiency, accuracy, reliable user services, effective information management, enhanced interlibrary co-operation and library prestige. Christian O Enyia (1991). Library computerization is the process of adequately utilizing computers to accomplish. Library functions which were originally performed manually by the librarians. Obaseki (2007) stated that computers have transcended the status of mere computing to communication as the uses of computers worldwide are primarily for communication data in networked environmentsโ. Computerizing the library functions and services encompasses the initial, planning processes; Selection of hardware and software; Acquisition of selected hardware and software; Training of library personnel on the use; Maintenance of these novel system; Networking of computer terminals (inter linking of computers); Retrospective conversion of the library collections i.e. printed materials and artifacts records by means of computer software into machine readable options. These steps above seem easily accomplishable, but in recent times the increase in the rate of a publications which is attributed itself to the universal growth of human knowledge vis-ร -vis the justifiable growth in social, economic, industrial and educational development has precipitated the problem of information management especially in Africa and Asia continents, which is a function of all libraries all over the world. Computerize may refer to Computerization: equipping something with or the usage of and associated Computerization by computers and software Business process reengineering that converts a manual process into one done by a computer Equipping with a general purpose computer, embedded computer, or computer system Inputting data (computing) into computers Digitizing information for computers Creating computer-generated content. The study seeks to appraise the effect of computerization of library on studentsโ academic performance.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The application of computers in the performance of library services has brought many advantages .However the system is been faced by many challenges such as problems of poor funding, inadequate physical and environmental facilities such as low grade buildings, unreliable power supply and the scanty amount of information holdings in most of our libraries, high cost of Staff computer training, standby power generating plants, inadequate competent personnel. The problem confronting the study is to appraise the effect of computerization of library on studentsโ academic performance.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The Main Objective of the study is to appraise the effect of computerization of library on studentsโ academic performance; The specific objectives include
