Chapter One of Assessing the Perceptions of Motorists on Zebra Crossing in Kaduna Metropolis
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The protection of lives and property is indeed that of the government. Hence it is the responsibility of government to provide the environment and amenities which enhances the protection of its citizen. Zebra crossing is the name given to the alternating black-and-white stripes which runs from one side of the road to another just like a zebraโs coat; Lekan Sote, (2016). This is to provide safety for the people to cross the road. This implies that whenever pedestrians step on them all driving vehicles must stop to permit the pedestrian cross the road successfully to the other side of the road. The Zebra crossings are usually located in the center of the city, residential areas, downtown or business districts, or suburban areas where people and the activities they engage in encroach into the road. The zebra crossinging identified with white, narrow, and zigzag lines drawn in across the center of the road, provides a warning to the motorists, bikers, and pedestrians that they are approaching a zebra crossing. While motorists and bikers are meant to reduce their speed and stop, pedestrians are to take advantage of the opportunity to cross to the other side of the road. Therefore, it an offence to stop a vehicle within those lines except when the pedestrian are crossing. The service also functions at night where the Amber coloured globes placed atop zebra-striped poles beside zebra crossings, and amber coloured studs called Belisha beacons, placed on the floor of the road, also caution motorists, bikers and pedestrians at night. The provision of zebra crossing is useful for aged adults, children, disabled and feeble pedestrians. The study seeks to assess the perception of motorist on zebra crossing in Kaduna metropolis.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The nature of our city centers shows people are not patient enough to observe rule and regulations especially when it comes toย ย observing traffic rules. Nigerian drivers, intentionally disregard road signs including zebra crossing. Drivers in the metropolis, routinely ignore this road etiquette. Instead of stopping and allowing pedestrians who step on the zebra crossing to go, they step on the pedal, and zoom off at very high speed. This is a total disregard to the government, the laws and regulation of the country. Hence a disregard to human lives. The problem confronting the study is assessing the perception of motorist on zebra crossing in kaduna metropolis. |
