Abstract Of A Critical Study of the Practice Characteristics of Architectural Firms in Nigeria

Very little is known about the architectural firms in Nigeria. Theย  studyย  thusย  exploredย  the
characteristics of architectural firmsย  inย  Nigeriaย  empiricallyย  usingย  theย  systemsย  approachย  toย  the study of organizations. The study investigated the organizational profiles, cultures,ย  strategiesย  and structures of the architectural firms. The tasks and informationย  technologyย  characteristicsย  ofย  the architecturalย  firmsย  asย  wellย  asย  theย  externalย  influencesย  onย  theย  firmsย ย  wereย ย  alsoย ย  investigated, culminating in the investigation of the types of architectural firms that existed in Nigeria. This study thus took an approach which wasย  exploratoryย  andย  descriptive.ย  Therefore,ย  the researchย  wasย  mainlyย  inductive.ย ย  Theย ย  architecturalย ย  practiceย ย  wasย ย  studiedย ย  asย ย  aย ย  professional organization and the architectural firms wereย  studiedย  holistically,ย  takingย  theย  systemsย  approach. Theย  sampleย  sizeย  wasย  derivedย  fromย  theย  listย  ofย  architecturalย ย  firmsย ย  registeredย ย  byย ย  Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON, 2006). The purposiveย  andย  randomย  samplingย  methods were employed. The surveyย  andย  qualitativeย  methodsย  wereย  used,ย  withย  theย  firmย  asย  theย  unitย  of analysis. The survey instrument was the structured questionnaire, while the qualitativeย  instrument was the interview schedule. Theย  ninety-twoย  (92)ย  questionnairesย  collectedย  wereย  analyzedย  using frequencies, cross tabulations, the chi-square test, principal component analysis, the coefficientย  of correlation (Pearsonรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs product-moment correlationย  coefficient),ย  Multipleย  Analysisย  ofย  Variance, (MANOVA), discriminant analysis, regression analysis and clusterย  analysis.ย ย  Theย  dataย  fromย  the interview were analyzed using content analysis.
The five types of firms identified by the study included male-dominated firms,ย  amorphous
firms, conventional firms, stable/ traditional firms and versatile firms.ย  The most importantย  causes of differences between the types of architectural firms in Nigeriaย  wereย  levelย  ofย  specializationย  of activities, and varieties of services offered, which accounted for more than half ofย  theย  differences between the firms.
Most of the architectural firms sampled in Nigeria were foundย  toย  beย  moreย  thanย  tenย  (10)
years old, small sized, and owned by a sole principal. They had the culture of innovation,ย  butย  not the culture of aggression in the pursuit of business opportunities or concern forย  profit.ย  Theย  study found that most of the clients of the architectural firmsย  wereย  privateย  individualsย  inย  Nigeriaย  and most of their projects were residential projects. Most of the clients of the architecturalย  firmsย  were sourced through personal contact and the projects most of theย  firmsย  carriedย  outย  wereย  thoseย  that they were able to obtain commissions for. Most of the firms were engaged in projectsย  whichย  used the design and build method and these firms were found toย  haveย  moreย  residentialย  projects.ย  Also participation in design and build method appeared to be a survival strategy asย  theย  firmsย  thatย  had existed for more than 15 years did not participate in projects which usedย  thisย  method.ย  Theย  firms mostly used competence in design, followed by AUTOCAD and informationย  technologyย  literacy as criteria for the selection of staff. Findings of theย  studyย  indicatedย  thatย  informationย  technology facilities were highly available in most of the firms, and the internet was mostly used forย  sourcing information. The results also suggest that the internet was used as a tool for centralization.
The study further found that the external influences on most of the architectural firms were
not so strong and the greatest influences were those exertedย  byย  clients,ย  advancesย  inย  information technology and the national economy.ย  Theย  characteristicsย  ofย  theย  firmsย  mostย  affectedย  byย  these external influences were the staff management culture of the firms, the strategic goals of theย  firms and the qualification and experience of the principal.
The study concluded that architectural firms need toย  takeย  advantageย  ofย  theย  opportunities
provided by information technology to operate on a global level. There is a needย  forย  architectural schools in Nigeria to fullyย ย  integrateย  internshipย  intoย  theย  studyย  ofย  architectureย  asย  wellย  asย  train students extensively in constructionย  methodsย  toย  meetย  theย  demandsย  ofย  architecturalย  firms.ย  The study further concluded that there is a need for the businessย  trainingย  ofย  architectsย  asย  thisย  wasย  a factor responsible for the success of architecturalย  firms.ย  Theย  systemsย  approachย  toย  theย  studyย  of architectural firms had been useful and practical.ย  Moreย  studiesย  areย  required,ย  usingย  theย  systems approach, on peculiarities of architectural firms and their management strategies.
